AN ENDLESS CRUSH ON VELVET: FALL 2016
Be a trend follower or a brazen leader, it doesn't matter. It's velvet.
The Fall 2016 trends have been seen and seen again. Worn? Not so much. (Not by norms.) We’ve been waiting to reinterpret these particularly moody catwalks since fashion week, in February.
With transeasonal days still on the loom, the new arrivals of puff jackets, chunky platform boots and statement furs mean nothing — not while the August heat continues to burn red.
So then there’s velvet. An antidote to our subconsciously innate buy now, wear now sensibilities. A royal designer favorite of the season, the tactile fabric wildly oscillates through aesthetics — nostalgia, romance, dandyism, glam rock, mod, elegance.
Never a fleeting trend, velvet is always in the background (or underground) of our collective sartorial notions...fading and escalating, embracing designs of past and future.
No matter what they say about pinstriped blouses, velvet might actually be the only thing you can properly “wear from day to night" and off into the stratosphere.
Blue oblivion, smiling at me.
A playful pastiche of retro-cool ideals for freewheeling homegirls.
Never not a renaissance.
Even the waves dance to the crushing of their own melodies.
